Biography

Johnny "The Velvet Hammer" Smith was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1928. He began playing guitar at the age of 12, and quickly became obsessed with the instrument. By the time he was 16, he was already playing in local clubs and bars, honing his skills and developing his unique style.

In the early 1950s, Johnny moved to Nashville to try and make it as a professional musician. It didn't take long for him to catch the attention of record executives, and he soon signed a deal with RCA Victor. His debut album, "The Velvet Hammer", was released in 1953, and immediately established him as a rising star in the rock and roll scene.

Johnny's music was a unique blend of blues, country, and rockabilly, and his virtuosic guitar playing and soulful vocals quickly made him a fan favorite. He was known for his incredible stage presence, commanding the attention of audiences with his electrifying performances.

Despite his success, Johnny struggled with alcohol addiction throughout his career. His addiction led to several controversies, including an infamous incident where he was arrested for public intoxication after a show in New York City. However, he managed to stay focused on his music, and continued to produce critically acclaimed albums throughout the 1950s.

In 1956, Johnny won his first Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. Over the next few years, he would go on to win four more Grammys, cementing his place as one of the greatest rock and roll musicians of his time.

Sadly, Johnny's addiction continued to take its toll on him, and he passed away in 1960 at the age of 32. Despite his short career, his influence on rock and roll can still be felt today, and he remains a beloved icon of the genre.
