Biography

Anaïs Rose came to Panama City in the 1970s from Martinique via Paris, carrying a suitcase full of notebooks and a voice trained in the French chanson tradition and then left to wander. What it found in Panama suited her — the heat, the polyrhythm, the way the city held so many migrations at once without resolving them. Her recordings from this period are languid and precise and slightly out of time, as if arriving from somewhere adjacent to the decade they were made in. She has never gone back to France, and does not expect to.
